It means, that you provide your credit card details to the hotel. Your card won't be debited in advance. If you change or cancel your reservation after the cancellation deadline and in case of a no-show, the hotel is entitled to charge a penalty (specified on the hotel's website) to your credit card. (Not all accommodations specify a penalty and even if a penalty applies, not all hotels will charge it to your credit card.) If you don't secure your reservation with a credit card, then the hotel - especially in the high season, for long stays, late arrival or group reservations - may request other type of guarantee (e.g. advance payment, confirmation by telephone or fax, etc.).
